Anchor woman Fired after choosing to go Natural.

I thought this was interesting to read because it is really sad to see how many people of all backgrounds feel about our hair. What's even more sad...is that it's not even accepted by the masses within our race especially from our men. Why is this? Let's start the discussion.

It's a Natural Hair Journey

Well...it has been a while since I have posted to my Blog but I wanted to share my journey of transitioning from Relaxed/Permed hair to my Natural (God-given) hair.

This is my 3rd attempt at transitioning and right now I am at the VERY place I usually get to before I cave in and put a relaxer in my hair. This time is different, though. I am forcing myself to push through this in-between stage (where I have a significant amount of new growth and also relaxed ends). I DO NOT WANT TO DO THE BIG CHOP!!!

I have been 6 months without a relaxer and for the last 6 months I have been wearing sew-ins. This is my hair after taking out my sew-in and washing and deep conditioning my hair. OVER half of my head is new growth. Amazing!!! I slicked my hair back into a ponytail and curled my relaxed ends on rods. LOOK at those waves.

This was so exciting to me once I saw these waves because it gave me an idea of what my curl pattern might look like and it gave me the inspiration to continue pushing.

Now I know that transitioning is a rigorous process and it takes dedication and patience. I'm learning to try new techniques and I am playing around with various styles that I can wear during this process. You Tube is a great resource for transitioning hairstyle ideas.

The reason I have wanted to go natural may be deeper for me than for others. It was not just to achieve a certain look but it was a spiritual decision. In addition to my hair thinning as I age, I also appreciate the BEAUTY of OUR natural, birth-born hair. I love it in whatever texture it is in. I feel that we have become a race so caught up with mainstream America's idea of what Beauty is...that we have forgotten just how naturally BEAUTIFUL we are. Without the hair weave, makeup, and nails...our skin is glowing, our eyes carry the images of the ancestors, and our HAIR is so fascinating because of the versatility of our hair. We have been conditioned to think that our natural hair is unattractive. BUT guess what...our hair holds historical connections to our African cultures.

I saw an article on Facebook about the way Solange Knowles wore her hair for wedding last weekend. I was very upset to hear people going in on her for wearing an Afro at her wedding. First of all, it was HER wedding and she could wear her hair anyway she chose but secondly, how dare people say such things as her hair was not beautiful. How does something that naturally grows out of your head (the way GOD intended) NOT be beautiful? The bible says that Jesus' hair was like Wool...hmmmmm. GOD must have thought this texture of hair was beautiful or else he would not have given his only son THIS kind of hair.

Okay enough on the history lesson of our hair. My co-worker Adrienne Nichole Martin is a beautiful natural hair girl. She has inspired me to continue on this path and has offered her help and encouragement along the way. She has suggested products that she has used with positive results. One thing she has told me is to not run out and buy a ton of hair care products. She says that there are more cost-efficient and natural products that I can use. I explained to her that when I took the sew-in out my hair was tangled that I almost broke the comb off in my hair...LOL. She told me to mix baking soda in with my conditioner. I tried this and WOW. I was able to comb through my hair from root to end with no problem.

Check out Adrienne's beautiful NATURAL hair!!!

Adrienne Nichole has agreed to be a consultant for people that are transitioning or already natural. If you have questions that you would like her to answer please leave them in the comments section.

I hope you continue to follow me along this journey!!!

Do you Procrastinate?

Do you sometimes put off doing things today and say "I'll just do it tomorrow?" I know I have been guilty of procrastination. I think we all suffer from it from time to time but it should never be the norm with any of us. Procrastination leads to nothing being accomplished. Dreams never being fulfilled.

We all must start somewhere - why not start TODAY!!! Whatever it is you need to accomplish...start today with a few steps and tomorrow do a little more. Push yourself each day to do more toward your goals then you did yesterday.

Can you see the vision? Do you believe that you deserve it? Are you willing to put in the work for it? If you fall down...GET YO BUTT BACK UP!!! Never give up...keep pushing. Nothing worth having is ever easy to obtain...we all must work to get it and then keep what we desire.

"Procrastination will DELAY your change!!! Steve Harvey

Teen Sex Trafficking and the primary hub is Atlanta, Georgia

This subject really bothered me and I knew I had to research it and write about it. The other day I was watching Stolen Innocence on BET. There were a panel of speakers and they were discussing the problem with teen sex trafficking and how Atlanta is the primary hub for this crime. They spoke about the numerous strip clubs that exist in Atlanta and how many high paying people, including stars, frequent these strip clubs.

Sexual exploitation of OUR children right in our backyard is bothering to me. The facts about sex trafficking are startling. THE NUMBERS WILL SHOCK YOU! It is gut-wrenching, eye-opening, and heart-breaking.

The sex trade is currently exploiting 1 million children. The yearly profit of this black-market trade in human beings is $32 billion. Sex trafficking is currently the fastest growing criminal enterprise in the 21st century. With all the money the government spends on the War on Drugs...What about our innocent little GIRLS????

The U.S. State Department estimates that 244,000 American children and youth are at risk of sexual exploitation. The average age of children exploited is 14; however, children as young as 10 and 11 have been reported as victims (marietta.patch.com)

As I continue to do more research on this, I am astounded at how close to home this issue hits. They say that most teens caught up in the sex trade come broken homes and are usually runaways but through my research on the metropolitan area of Atlanta, I have found that a great number of these kids come from affluent neighborhoods and decent homes. This crime is not limited to kids from inner city Atlanta but some of them come from Marietta and Cobb County.

1st Live Radio Show

Well...tonight I hosted my first live radio show. This is where callers could call in and talk with me live over the air. Hmmm...it was interesting to say the least. I ran into a few kinks. I could actually see the listeners but I could not answer their calls. AND...I was a little confused about whether they just wanted to listen or actually speak live to me. Then I was getting text messages from people saying that they were having difficulty calling in...AND I thought that was the issue. So...I ended the show only to realize that all I had to do was hit a button to let the caller on the air...How stupid? Huh? Well...I got back on the air and BEGGED my callers to call back ASAP and finally I was able to connect with Kathy. WHEW!!!

Kathy shared an interesting viewpoint on the level of commitment in marriages. I stated that everybody's view on the level commitment is different and what one person expects in their marriage is different than what someone else may expect.

Listen here but DON'T judge...LOL. I am still new at this and learning. I do come back to the show after initially ending the call...SO stayed tuned to hear Kathy's perspective.

Click the link below and scroll until you see tonight's topic...Why are less people committed in their marriages or click over to the right. Let me know what you think. Thanks guys.

Why it is important to LOVE yourself (A story of my personal journey)

Yesterday a friend from college posted pictures of a bunch of us. For some reason, seeing that picture immediately took me back to that time and I remembered how I used to feel about myself back then. I stared at the picture and my eyes began to swell up looking at the beautiful girl that has no idea just how beautiful she is. I studied the seating arrangement between me and the other girls. They are all gathered around smiling and posing for the picture and I am seated above them trying to kind of strike a pose but really just feeling out of place.

I remembered how I always felt out of place and like I never quite fit in anywhere. I looked at this young lady in the picture and thought about all the times she used to dream and wish that she was someone else. She didn't understand why her. She wanted to be thin and pretty. I remembered  the times just wishing I could just die, I hated being ME.

This hatred for myself also shined its ugly head upon the world. I was miserable and very unhappy and the world knew it. I acted out because I didn't know what else to do with this anger. I was sad and depressed. Although I wore a smile on the outside, the inside was so unhappy and full of hate (for myself).

I used to look at my mother and think "wow, she's so pretty, so what happened to me". Here's the funny thing, I always knew I was cute and pretty but when your overweight you feel that everything about you is unattractive.

Years after graduating from college and having my son, I started a journey to find out how to love myself and deal with what I was born with. I knew I could lose the weight and already had lost a good amount of it. BUT that attitude was not going anywhere until I dealt with it, confronted it, and decided that I wanted to be a better person. The journey has not been easy as a matter of fact it has been downright hard.

I started by realizing that I am pretty (on the outside) but the inside is a MESS!!! And that no matter how pretty I am on the outside that it must come from within and that is when your TRUE beauty begins to shine. I started reading a lot. I read all of Iyanla Vanzant books and Maya Angelou. I decided that I wanted to be empowered within myself and I needed to fill my mind with that energy.

I am still on my journey and probably will until I leave this body. I align myself with positive people and those that I know truly care for me. My circle is small now but it's okay because I realize that
I don't need a lot of people. I just need people that love me and want to help me continue to be a better person.

No one asked that young lady in the picture how she felt, why was she so sad, or why was she so angry. As a matter of fact no one ever asked me those questions until GOD put someone in my life that truly loved me, wanted the best for me and from me and he asked those questions. You see, although I had started my journey before him, I had yet to really look deep within my life for the answers. I think I kind of thought that I just needed to focus on the now and try to change that part of my life. Well...if you ask GOD he will deliver. So for the first time in my life, I had to ponder over past pain and hurt and deal with some childhood issues. It hurt. It hurts now to write this BUT you have to confront issues and then forgive those that have hurt you and forgive yourself. Then you can begin your journey to a healthy you.

THANK YOU MR. HOLLINGS. For allowing GOD to use you to be the blessing I didn't know I needed.

If only that young girl knew then what she knows now!!!

WOW!!! We had so much fun last night!!! The night was a huge success. The ladies received free facials and learned how to properly apply makeup. They taste tested samples of Vi shakes and cereal. Leila Spivey informed the ladies and educated them about living a healthier lifestyle. AND, they were able to sample products from Cloud 9 and touch the toys to feel the different vibrating effects.

The food was awesome and we had plenty of mixed drinks to accommodate everyone's personal preference. It was a BLAST!!!

If you missed it don't worry, we will be hosting another one soon. Stay tuned and keeping checking my blog for updates and upcoming events.
